IRC started in 1988 when Jarkko Oikarinen created a real-time chat protocol 🌐 It soon grew into major networks like EFnet (1990) and Undernet (1992), shaping online communities long before social media.

Here's a May 1993 memo by J. Oikarinen and D. Reed about IRC protocol that defines an Experimental Protocol for the Internet community: https://archive.org/details/rfc1459

Status of This Memo
This memo defines an Experimental Protocol for the Internet community. Discussion and suggestions for improvement are requested. Please refer to the current edition of the "IAB Official Protocol Standards" for the standardization state and status of this protocol. Distribution of this memo is unlimited.
Abstract
The IRC protocol was developed over the last 4 years since it was first implemented as a means for users on a BBS to chat amongst themselves. Now it supports a world-wide network of servers and clients, and is stringing to cope with growth. Over the past 2 years, the average number of users connected to the main IRC network has grown by a factor of 10.
The IRC protocol is a text-based protocol, with the simplest client being any socket program capable of connecting to the server.
Below this are the Contents. 1.1 Servers
The server forms the backbone of IRC, providing a point to which clients may connect to to talk to each other, and a point for other servers to connect to, forming an IRC network. The only network configuration allowed for IRC servers is that of a spanning tree [see Fig. 1] where each server acts as a central node for the rest of the net it sees.

The app logo is in handsome, plain text rather than a rainbow. Settings screen of voyagynx. The server is set to travelynx.de and the two tokens are redacted. The high-contrast switch is turned on. Font is white on black surface. Screenshot of voyagynx in default contrast mode. The background is dark grey, the current check in button shows a bus check in with theming of German bus lines. The text on the page is in light rose and the app logo is in mixed rainbow colors with a hard to read font shadow. Settings screen of voyagynx. The server is set to travelynx.de and the two tokens are redacted. The high-contrast switch is turned off. Font is light rose on dark grey surface.

Indian Coffee House, #Chandigarh is one of the good cafés in #India.

A board can be seen with "Indian Coffee House" written on it in a big font. A café can be seen behind the board.

Mastodon is the Fediverse's Ubuntu.

Here's my terrible attempt at writing propaganda on college walls lol

A white wall inside a classroom of a college, on which "Ditch Windows, Use Fedora" is written using a blue chalk. The words "Windows" and "Fedora" are implied with their respective hand-drawn logos.

this should be cool for bike riding tonight

Sometimes I buy domain names with a vague idea in mind.

Not this time.

People say mastodon is too hard to explain to non-technical people, but I explained it the other day to someone extremely non-technical by just saying "it's decentralised. so instead of being run by one company, it's run by whoever wants to run their own version of it. This way there's no profit incentive, no algorithm and no ads" and she immediately understood what I meant, and why that would be a good thing.

You don't really need to explain federation and all the underlying tech to explain people what it is. Even federation is simple to explain. "anyone can run their own version of it - but they can all still talk to each other"

New computer with Windows pre-installed? Want to install 🐧 instead?

You pay for , even if you don’t use it. That’s unfair and non-transparent.

to all my local peeps, I have now shifted to a new place, and had my first shower here, it was … deeply dissapointing, only being mildly relaxing because I was stressed out for the past three days and hadnt gotten a chance to unwind at all.

Rant aside, given I'll buy a new one anyways, anyone using low flow / environmentally friendly shower heads? how do they feel? Anything I could buy locally for cheap? I love showers, Id rather continue enjoying them.

@NLBRT I would a more broad right like in France for refusal to work in hazardous conditions, we need to prop up our worker safety regulations and push for stronger enforcement of them
