@joeyh I'm investigating self-hosting of an activitypub server and I made I deploy of mastodon on a test machine, I have the same fear.
About pleroma, I don't know too much the drama, I started using it because the Debian Social Team (I always thanks them) decided to use it since is more resources friendly.
I don't know how much this instance is defederated, but I always had nice interactions until now.
