@atomicpoet at an old job, they did not wanted to replace a mechanical disk I had in my work laptop (C++ developer, you can immagine my joy) so I bought a Samsung T5 usb disk and installed the OS there (with full disk encryption). I was booting from USB3 and it was fast enough (way faster than a mechanical disk), maybe you could try this compromise...
