Are you affected by #Telegram being (temporarily) banned in #India for a reason so ridiculous it isn't even wrong?
Maybe now's a good time to try out a #decentralised messaging network like #XMPP! It's easy to get started with @prav and the more inclined can dig deeper for more customisable options
@SpaciousCoder78 Signal managed to one-up us by directing the exodus to themselves when the WhatsApp scandal broke and we've been preparing a response even since
@badrihippo But like, do that anyway because Telegram is crap and one of the few things crappier than Telegram is Durov.
I think it's funny he's straight up admitting he's gotta pay people to use Telegram or sing his praises.
@BalooUriza yes of course!
Are you using Telegram? If so, then now's a got time to try out XMPP (via Prav or anything else) 😉
@SpaciousCoder78 @badrihippo @prav though it only makes govt do slightly more work - if they have to ban many apps or services. I don't think they mind banning all #XMPP apps as well, if it comes to that. China does that already.
Your self hosted ones might be saved, but all public ones might come in the line of fire. It'd be slightly better as they might not ban all.
For me XMPP is mainly resisting big tech companirs, if govt is your target, #VPN, #TOR, etc has better success rate.
@BalooUriza @badrihippo @prav that is classic way of cheering unfair action against people you don't like, thinking people you like ( or apps you think are good) will never be touched.
I stand with #Telegram, not because I like it, but they can now use the same excuse against any platform including #Prav. These kinds of actions set legal precedents for future actions.
@praveen I feel like you'd have a point if we weren't talking about a billionaire fascist.
@BalooUriza @praveen @badrihippo @prav But the action taken against Telegram wasn't because the owner is a fascist or a billionaire. The government's heavy-handed action can be taken against any messaging app/service they don't like and this is precisely what's wrong about it.
Also it doesn't solve any of the problems this ban claims to solve. So, what we get is a dictator state without any checks and balances.
@BalooUriza @badrihippo @prav this is exactly what you can see in history.
You can conitnue clapping until they come for you. Then no one else will be left for you.
If you are going to judge something done to someone entirely based on if you like or dislike someone, you are easily missing history.
@debacle Here it is https://thewire.in/government/government-blocks-telegram-app-till-june-22-over-neet-ug-exam
Unfortunately, a lot of news websites operating in India are behind a paywall, so this is the only one I found.
@debacle @BalooUriza @badrihippo @prav Unfortunately the Delhi Highcourt did not stand up to the goverment to protect rights of citizens.
This now gives more broader powers to govt unless overturned by Supreme Court.
