Why should you work on free software (or other technology issues)?

I would add that free software allows us to talk about these issues. Consider how alot of nonfree software has a EULA that says "the proprietor has the right to take away your license to use at anytime". Basically if you come in between the proprietor and their profits, your means to work, conduct activism, etc will be cut.

Email is much harder to selfhost. My current provider is migadu. You should read their privacy policy and such. Ive heard good things about posteo and other places. Ofc. Email is very insecure and ideally, someone makes some software to make pgp easier for normal people and it gets adoption from big organizations (banks, companies that bill you, etc.).

@heavenly_general @morenonatural For chat, I selfhost prosody. Prosody is very easy to setup and can be run on a raspberrypi.
For video calls, I am an fsf member so I can use their jitsi instance.

@heavenly_general @morenonatural Ya, that post definitely made me very skeptical of "privacy respecting services" that dont federate. (ie. protonmail, signal, etc.)

@heavenly_general @morenonatural I think Daniel (maintainer of conversations.im) had a good point about this:
Things like federation can help with the metadata problem because it is not kept in a central place.
See: https://gultsch.de/xmpp_2016.html
AFAIK, nextcloud federates or at least it did when I used it on my university's instance. I personally prefer syncthing cause it solves the metadata problem by being peer-to-peer.

@samanthasometimes @Shardiech Be advised if you live with others - some websites that FOSS nerds would never go on don't work with adblock on. So your family members will just quietly suffer since they dont know why a site isnt working...
On the plus side, it removes lowers the network traffic by ALOT alongside improving privacy.

@colinl @PierreCol LOL, Google creating a training set to teach computers how to program themselves would be a 4D chess move.
@dsv @redstarfish hmm. I think Leah is a really talented developer and we wouldn't have libreboot without her. I see a large part of the cost of the laptop as thanking her for her hard work.
@chris No worries! Maintaining an instance is hard and it's up to you how much you want to federate. No criticisms there. =)
@chris I think you misunderstood what I wrote. When I said "Login to get the best experience!", I was hating on youtube nagging you to login with your google account - which I dont have.
Peertube is great cause I can post from my pleroma account. What I said wasn't a critique of peertube. It's your choice if you want to federate. I think federation a positive since it allows others to engage and spread your videos but I can understand it requires more moderation.

Nice! gnome-chess works again on postmarketos/alpine. I finally have a game to play when Im waiting idly by.
@chriswere This alongside the "Login to get the best experience!" is really annoying.
Youtube really is terrible and only getting worse.

Hi, Im Anjan. I have been using gnu/linux since 2013. My undergrad was in Mechatronic Systems Engineering and I am currently a Master of Applied Sciences - Electrical and Computer Engineering Student.
In my free time, I like to contribute to free software. Recently, I have been working on improving software for the pinephone. Specifically, writing an operating system called sxmo:
