In case you missed it, acting ICE head Tom Homan was up yesterday complaining that ICE is having a hard time meeting the quotas they're setting because of campaigns telling people their rights and how to resist raids.

In case you're wondering if the little things you do could possibly make a difference, know that they already are.

@jasonkoebler thank goodness for data archivists and data hoarders

Thousands of datasets have disappeared from data.gov. Determining what's gone, why it's gone, and whether it moved elsewhere will to take time. Things are definitely being purged but archivists working hard to determine exactly what has happened to a given dataset

@bagder Well written and you get the point across very concisely! I despise those scanners too, since they end up not being very useful. On Debian, those tools don't understand that fixes get backported to stable versions and show big scary warnings where there are no problems at all.

"OpenAI says it has evidence Chinaโ€™s DeepSeek used its model to train competitor"

goose chase meme:
Altman: Waa, the Chinese stole my IP to train their LLM
Goose: What did you train your LLM on, Sam?
[goose pursues running man]
Goose: Where did you get your training data?

@bagder But I would still read it, is it out yet?

The Debian Publicity Team will no longer post on X/Twitter. We took this decision since we feel X doesn't reflect Debian shared values as stated in our social contract, code of conduct and diversity statement. X evolved into a place where people we care about don't feel safe. You are very much invited to follow us on https://bits.debian.org , on https://micronews.debian.org/ , or any media as listed on https://wiki.debian.org/Teams/Publicity/otherSN

@janneke Perhaps. Though I'd like to point out we didn't "switch" to the fediverse. We didn't have an official presence on FB. Other people set up RSS feed reposting bots on FB and Twitter to follow us. (Someone did on Mastodon too.)

This is our first social media account.

Python 1.0.0, released 31 years ago today:

--> Tired of decyphering the Perl code you wrote last week?

--> Frustrated with Bourne shell syntax?

--> Spent too much time staring at core dumps lately?

Maybe you should try Python, the next generation object-oriented
scripting and prototyping language, with a *readable* syntax. Python
has been used by hundreds of happy users all over the world during the
past three years, and is now ready for prime time.

In light of US tech oligarchy setting its sights on Wikimedia Foundation, a historical detail I did not know before: became the non-profit it is today partly as the result of a labour strike of Spanish Wikipedia editors who disagreed with the proposed inclusion of advertisements. Initially, it was not clear what revenue model Wikipedia would get, and Wales moved towards a for-profit model already a year after launch. However, rather than working for free, so Jimmy Wales could profit from their labour via advertising, Spanish contributors forked Spanish Wikipedia as the Encyclopedia Libre Universal. Under the threat of losing the editorial community of such a large language, Wales conceded and set up the non-profit.

That is to say, however imperfect they are, all the digital commons we have are the result of ongoing struggle and hard work to keep them as commons.

@debacle No love for rc-buggy?

@dansup @flancian Just a protip, if you're not transphobic, then one of the last things you should say is "I'm not transphobic I have trans friends". Especially since it's possible to say something transphobic even if you didn't mean it, or even not having had a clue that something might have come across as transphobic to someone else, which is why it's usually a good idea to hear people out and find out what might have caused some hurt.

@bagder Honestly? Not really.

It is only a year since we switched all man pages to markdown but wow, what an improvement and "life enhancer"!

With 2024 now behind us, we wanted to take a moment to reflect on the growth and achievements we accomplished as a community last year, and celebrate the incredible support we received from the FOSS community throughout the journey.

Anyone who goes through my post history, knows I work for Meta (Facebook).

I am "Consumer Content Administrative Manager". My primary duties include content appeals, account appeals, account reviews, and some peer review.

It is no surprise that my job depends on people using Facebook. Today, I am going to suggest, you not do so. I can make that suggestion because we have a user base of billions, and I know most people would keep using Facebook even if the Devil ran the company. People are strange.

But if you feel you can truly live without Facebook, do so. Internally, things are changing, and not for the better. You should especially consider leaving Meta if you are a minority, woman, LGBTQ+, trans, or identify as progressive, politically. If facts matter to you, and misinformation is something you do not want to be subject toward, you should especially consider leaving, Facebook.

You have no privacy from Meta, while using Meta. None. I do not care if you believe you disabled a "feature" or "opt out" of something. You only seem to have done so. And even if you're going to continue to use Meta, uninstall the app (all of them). We collect data on you, even when you're not using the app.
