Government officials in the UK have reportedly ordered Apple to build a backdoor that would give its authorities access to users’ encrypted iCloud data.

Apple will likely stop offering its encrypted cloud storage offering, Advanced Data Protection, to users in the country https://techcrunch.com/2025/02/07/uk-government-demands-apple-backdoor-to-encrypted-cloud-data-report/

@carlypage And people in the UK.... are just ok with this?

@highvoltage @carlypage i surely am not.. but is happening everywhere, they distract you with bs or the fear of terrorism/paedophiles and implement a surveillance state.. while the criminals laugh and keep doing what they doing..

Every time a terrorist attack happens, the offender was already under police surveillance.. someone needs to explain how breaking encryption would solve this?

@highvoltage @carlypage in London there’s a real issue with stolen phone.. it’s ridiculous.. and the police/government do nothing.. apparently encryption is the issue there too?

Or they blame the phone companies to block the stolen phones.. taking no responsibility for the state of things.. and labours are as bad as tories..

Apologies for the rant, but this news is pi&&in@ me off big time

@highvoltage @carlypage both main parties are against privacy rights, and thanks to the FPTP electoral system the mainstream party that wants to protect this can’t get as many seats as they would have commanded in a proportional system and worse, might be losing even votes ad people vote tactically for the party that seems to have a better chance locally

@highvoltage @carlypage though I should note that from my experience in the US people are also misinformed about their self interest thanks to media disinformation

@carlypage cannot confirm or talk about the request, cannot say whether encryption is broken, can appeal but still has to implement the request.. apply world wide for any customer with no connection to the UK.. where’s the state of law?
