Something that's been on my mind for a while but I've never seen anyone else discussing: should we even be surprised that we end up with a backwards-facing political regime when such a large portion of the media we consume consists of sequels and remakes?

Sequels have always been a thing of course, and I haven't gone back and looked at the box office charts for previous decades. But I feel like there were more fresh, new stories when I was younger. Now it's 95+% retreads?

@fraggle some of my absolute favourite movies in the recent decades buck the trend (inception. Might rewatch “the creator”). Also I’m thinking of the atrocious rebel moon and how it’s both an “original IP” but also has all the problems of a Star Wars sequel
