The enshitification of Discord is starting really quick.

This ad can serve as a case study into dark pattern design. The way to close it seems to appear only after some time and only if you move the mouse above it.

Until then it blocks texts in your chat...

Discord ad for "The Last Meadow" appearing in the lower right corner...

@masek Oh come on. It was already shit. Has been since I first was dragged kicking and screaming onto it in 2020.

@lproven Let's phrase it that way: "It crossed another of my borders" 😉

@masek @lproven I mediate my interaction with it via a libpurple/pidgin plugin. That might get me banned if they notice, apparently, but it hides all the Suck

@jmtd @masek Ooh, I haven't tried that. Worth a bash.

@lproven @masek Enjoy! It's this one: https://github.com/EionRobb/purple-discord/

THere are also plugins for WhatsApp (whatsmeow) which is currently working for me and Signal (libsignald) which is currently not.

@jmtd @lproven WhatsApp is an absolute no-go for me. Meta is a ten time worse company than Discord will ever be.

@masek @jmtd I was on WhatsApp long before Meta bought it, and it's a pretty much essential way to communicate with friends and family in other countries. I'm also on Signal (awful) and Telegram (great) but maybe 5% as many people are on them in aggregate. This makes them largely useless except for reaching geeks and pro techies.

@lproven @jmtd I migrated 80+ year old relatives to Signal without problems.

I agree that WhatsApp is more comfortable, but they will be unable to reach me there. Their choice ...

My choice is that I will not touch any product by Meta. I used WhatsApp before Meta bought it and even a short time after.

Then they changed their T&C in a way I could not accept. That prevented me from even deleting my account. That is a very shady practice.

I resorted to a legal approach, then they complied immediately.

@masek @jmtd As you wish. You do you.

It's more important to me that stuff works than that I avoid nasty evil companies. Especially given that they are all nasty and evil to some degree anyway.

@lproven @jmtd I agree, you have to do tradeoffs.

I am afraid that one day people will look at Meta and put them into the same category as "IG Farben" (company that produced Cyclon B in WW2).
