When I bought my last switch I learned (with a really confused face) that there actually IS a RJ45 to USB-A console cable (had to order it and am holding it sacred it's next mission). I was like: why would you do that? Just give me USB-Port. Or 5 USB-Pins. Why RJ45? It's so tempting connecting Ethernet π Even serial would be more intuitive, I have that RS323 adapter chip thingy somewhere, but RJ45?! Why?
@frank @tracketpacer RS232 over RJ45 has been a thing for decades, dating back to the days when routers had RS232 ports as actual network interfaces running HDLC to other routers.
RJ45 was much smaller than DB-25 so it was a big space savings, and using the same cable as ethernet meant easier field termination and less cable stock to keep on hand. And once you had that, using the same connector for the rs232 console cable made sense too.

Honestly, this is the fun part of the tech world. Even super smart and accomplished people will inevitably run up against something outside their domain and get to experience that awesome feeling of exploring something new and unfamiliar.
