Where are the / users on Fedi? Any recommendations on finding fun Jabber communities to chat with?

Hi @dynamic@social.coop,
I think most talk about it happens in the public and non public channels.
But you'll find some users if you follow the projects and the xsf.
There are some groups too, but I forgot their address and don't know how active they are.

Since I follow the hashtag on these relays:
https://fedi-relay.gyptazy.com/actor and https://relay.fedi.buzz/tag/xmpp
I didn't need more for far reach. (dunno of a normal account can follow it tho)

Saying that: Have a look at
@dino@fosstodon.org
@prosodyim@fosstodon.org
@daniel@gultsch.social
@monocles@monocles.social
@ejabberd@process-one.net
@tigase@fosstodon.org
@xmpp@fosstodon.org
@gajim@fosstodon.org
@praveen@social.masto.host

And follow them.
From the answers there you might discover more accounts.

@debacle

Is "here" the framapiaf.org instance?

Can confirm, someone not on frama's instance, still a regular xmpp user!

@debacle

Ah, yes, but how do I *find* everyone?

: )

@menel

I'm also a little confused by the list of accounts you've provided. It seems like these are the official accounts of various software projects that use XMPP / Jabber.

What I'm looking to do is find other XMPP *users* to chat with.

I'm not sure if I asked my question poorly, or if I'm underestimating how useful these accounts will be for that purpose. Clarify?

@dynamic@social.coop
You'll find users when you read comments under posts of these projects, at least that's what I was thinking

I don't think many normal users write much about xmpp at the fediverse. (same as you can't easily identify imessage or signal users) but people interacting with the projects are more likely to write about it.
If you seek contacts, the best way would to invite your friends and family, at least that's the people that 90% of my messages go to.
If you seek public chatrooms then thetu best way is using https://search.jabber.network
There are some general purpose chat rooms, most bigger ones are about specific topics tho, but some exists if you browse thr list or use search words.

@menel

Finally getting around to going through the accounts you recommend. I'd never heard of Monocles before. Am curious to hear how you learned about them, whether you use them, etc.

@dynamic@social.coop
I've just read people talking about it years ago in some xmpp room. Tried it once briefly years ago but wasn't my taste. I use conversations for my family chat, as does the rest of the family, and cheogram for the public rooms, because
I'm in a huge bunch of rooms and it has better tools to handle public channels and bridges like the biboumi irc bridge. (ad-hoc command support)
