"Metronormative narratives treat rural regions as a spatial closet out of which LGBTQ+ people must emerge by moving to the city and realizing 'the full expression of the sexual self.'"
Holy shit this is so real. The kind of nonsense we must do away with if we want anything like a "queer community" to exist.
@werdahias @anarchiv one thing i've noticed in finland recently is that the number of pride events in small (less than 10k pop) municipalities is growing fast. this year alone i've attended prides in two neibor places (pops 3800 and 1600), and later this week we'll have our own here (pop 8900).
so i guess that at least here this narrative is finally changing.
@werdahias @anarchiv sorry to nerd out on this, but i made a little statistic based on what https://seta.fi/jarjesto/pride-tapahtumat-suomessa/ lists here, ie. this year's pride events in finland.
8 events in cities over 100k pop (out of 9)
15 in cities 30k-100k (out of 27)
18 in towns 10k-30k (out of 61)
18 in towns under 10k (out of 211)
so yeah, there's still lots of room to organize pride events in new places, but they're definitely not just a big city thing any more.
