BSD chads be like, "Hey let's have MORE diversity, how about an instance dedicated to #illumos and retro-solaris stuff?!?"

@rl_dane the systemd crowd is also working on replacing the #FHS with their idea of how a GNU/Linux filesysten should look like 𤮠according to LWN.
Theyāre good at appropriating general-sounding names (first freedesktop.org
now "Linux #UAPI group") for themselves to be able to say (from the systemd side) that "an independent standards group" (staffed with their people) is doing the change.
"But itās not just people from #systemd but also from [ā¦], Debian, [ā¦]" they say. Yes, strictly speaking the systemd maintainers in Debian, who are responsible for lots and lots of breakage on usersā systems hy forcing through their stuff, are "people from Debian".
Oh, and they also have a token subgroup where someone not from the systemd/gnome/fdo crowd is working on somethi g totally unrelated to be able to say theyāre not an sd/g/fdo-only ship, even if both in practice and for this specific project fully they are.
š¤®I'm amazed that Debian + Hurd is still a thing.
I'm kinda sad that Debian kFreeBSD is gone, but Chimera is pretty great, and literally the opposite. ;)
@mirabilos @rl_dane That posse has been doing that for at least 25 years (I still remember kgi, https://web.archive.org/web/20180207181101/http://www.kgi-project.org/, which hasn't found their blessing).
I wonder how much traction an alternative (but heavily overlapping) userland needs to become self-sustaining. Past experience wasn't good, but the tides are changing (we're not necessarily cheering anymore when a corp crash-lands on the footsteps of a community project like we used to)
Wasnāt HAL also a thing of theirs, which FreeBSD then subscribed to and ended up being stuck to that dead-end?
FreeBSD is like that nerdy-but-kind teenager that's desperately trying to be friends with the "in crowd" that always treat him like dirt.
@rl_dane Chad, based and so on sounds so much like alt-right incel language to me.
I think it's more internet meme language.
@rl_dane When you see where most of the meme stuff originates (4-chan) that's basically the same isn't it? :p
I think the problem is that most people don't understand where it comes from or what it means to a particularly nasty sub-culture, and so it gets broadly accepted where it otherwise wouldn't.
I still get creeped out by Pepe memes, and the pushback I get is, "it's just a meme, man."
And like, it's a particularly odious meme, the nasty undercurrents of which is known by everyone, so why propagate it, when even the original creator disavowed it?
"Stan" isn't an internet meme, though, it's just a rap meme, from an Eminem song about a fanatical fan (afaik). But "Chad" is kinda grody, I should remove that from my vocab, to be fair.
> Pepe memes
Oh man, the popularity of Pepe meme in Russian meme community is overwhelmingš. For us it is just a sad frog inserted in the memes, which embodies the problems of people in modern society. Especially in the memes about problems of Russian hermits š
And the shitstorm, after some ppl on the other side of ocean proclaimed Pepe as a racist meme, was enormous and terrifying š
I'm with @sotolf@polymaths.social here. Pepe did originate at 4chan, but wasn't associated with right wing community, it was later appropriated by that crowd. Chad and based did come from the right wing folk ā years have passed and it's made its ways beyond these communities, some of those who use it don't even know about the origins, but it still rubs me the wrong way ā it's not even associated with something conservative for me, but with something annoying š
No, this appears correct if we dig that deep into the etymology. I've never been a fan of Lil B (too old for that shit, lol), but I remember it being adopted by Noah23 circa the first album of the Occult Trill cycle. I got it on BandCamp when it came out back in 2011 andā¦Ā "based" didn't catch on with me, it only appeared to me being a shoutout to Lil B.
In other words it wasn't that widespread even in the hip-hop community and was mostly associated with one person, I believe it remains that way. And, AFAIR, even Lil B himself ā he's been using it a bit differently. Same as with that digital painting of a pear with mouth that became the base of the popular "LOLWUT" macro āĀ it was found on Deviant Art, but it doesn't mean that the meme originated there š¤·
Then again, it's not about who used it first, or the way the word sounds āĀ that isn't why we associate it with something annoying, it's the forced nature of some memes. Pepe the frog existed as a meme long before, ehm⦠he started leaning right. Then there are two series of highly annoying forced memes based on My Little Pony and Rozen Maiden āĀ does either show have anything to do with it? No āĀ it's just that someone started making posts about it and to some it appeared annoying, then a third wider group started posting it more to make it even more annoying āĀ because trolling is cool, isn't it? š
When I meet someone posting these ponies or dolls online today, do I hate them for it? Of course not āĀ because they aren't doing it to be annoying, they just like the shows. Same is true for Pepe āĀ even some of those who want to have nothing to do with right wing like him, for them it's still the "feels good man" frog.
I'm afraid that despite loosening its ties with 4chan, with "based" it still doesn't work the same way ā because there is no original meaning to go to. Should I expect the one who said it to be into Lil B? But it's never the case āĀ most of those who use "based and somethingpilled" don't even know who he is!
Another aspect is that it gets associated with bad things āĀ that is why I dislike many Russian memes by the way, a lot of them are based on things that aren't just naughty, but outright bad āĀ like prison rape. Of course, some things can be offensive, but funny āĀ Mr.Show has lots of offensive humour. And David Cross ā one of those who created the show, once said: if you can make it offensive, but much finnier ā go for it; but if you can make it offensive and it only becomes more offensive āĀ stop right there!
Of course with forced memes no one keeps track of it and even attempts to strike the right balance āĀ so oftentimes it's just something nasty AND annoying š©
And one thing I should've said earlier āĀ in no way I insist on you not using it, we live in a free count⦠Well, some of us still do š
You are free to use it the way you see fit, I'm just chiming in to explain why it has undesirable connotation for me personally.
