i just realized that i can turn on "desktop mode" on my android phone and connect it to my dell monitor over usb-c/displayport that has an integrated usb hub etc. i thought this might be an interesting experience to check as a benchmark for MNT Reform Touch (name tbd). but i'm shocked how alpha/prototype quality this is, absolute jank+glitchfest, what's going on :0

@mntmn o.O (Continuum from the Windows Phone era but for Linux Phones?)

i already braced for the bar being raised and having to step up my game but it just dropped by a mile

thanks gnome, kde, sway etc i guess!

@mntmn MNT Tricorder?

@max_power hm, neat idea to have some sort of sensor cartridge

@mntmn MNT Reform Touch sounds like a concept I am eager to hear more of. I'd be curious to know if it is something that could be made to also work with display glasses using Monado for head tracking.

@mntmn ever since discovering the Nexdock a few weeks ago, i've been longing for a good linux phone with USB-C Dp, and a good laptop-like dock with my keyboard and a 16:10 or better display

@ikuturso i think it depends on the required GPU/display pipeline performance... do you have some numbers, what are the resolutions and required framerate?

@mntmn Sounds like the team behind the new Android based ChromeOS will have some work to do. Turns out that mobile and desktop are very different flows and consolidating both isn't easy. I remember Canonical trying it out, not sure what exactly failed, but we have so much more resolution and performance, that I'm thinking that today is a better moment to try it out again.

@mntmn Sounds like a cool project!

@mntmn Some Android phones (Samsung, Motorola) have vendor-specific versions of this that are actually quite decent, but the version in stock Android is pretty jank for now yeah

Most of the mobile Linux DEs can also do this with varying degrees of polish. I think only Lomiri really makes the external display feel like a desktop, but some of the others (Phosh, Plasma Mobile) let you turn on a docked mode that disables auto-maximization and such

@mntmn 3840x1080 @ 60Hz (total, not per-eye) would be good enough. Some of these also do have 72Hz or 120Hz modes but don't typically offer higher resolutions than that.

@mntmn
The PinePhone had that years ago and it wasn't particularly glitchy: how can Google get it so wrong?!

@mntmn Android 16 had some work done for the desktop mode. Last time I checked this on it was terrible. I couldn't use any app. I'm hoping for at least running moonlight app on Android on external monitor, maybe wireless display. This and a foldable Bluetooth keyboard would make me invincible
