I found this wonderful book today, showing the state of home computing ~25 years ago :)

(Obligatory fedi note: about a year before I first used Linux.)

The Reader's Digest "beginner's guide to home computing".

@neil Linux in 2001? I beat you by 8 years.

I own a copy of Smalltalk/V 286 which was really "leet" home computing.

@neil Computers! Fun for all the family!

@neil

I sure the first Linux I used was a LAMP stack some colleagues and I put together in work (on the quiet) and smuggled into the server room.

It was a gorilla project and we had no budget so it was a build from whatever we had to hand. Maybe a Compaq Desktop PC?

Maybe in 1999 or 2000? Seems like the Second Age of Middle Earth now 😉🤷‍♂️

@neil
Which flavour was that? Slackware? Mandrake?

I started running my first home mail server round about then, on Mandrake I think. I remember being keen in those days, and doing stuff like recompiling the kernel.

@dave I'd guess Debian Potato.

@neil @dave That was my first one!
