I'm trying to get through the Discworld books in order (there's something comforting about doing it in some kind of organisation) but I really, really just wanna hurry up and get to Small Gods

Guards! Guards is definitely quite high on the list of favourites, which comes before it, but Small Gods has got to be right at the top

@neil let me third that then! Where did you get stuck last time? The first ones are very different from the rest, and definitely lack polish

@babe small gods was the one that tipped me over into convincing my dad to read them (and he’s very glad I did)

@neil @babe (note to self: I'm not shy about preaching to the choir, but expounding on the greatness of the Discworld books on the Fedi is a step too far even for me)

@neil It's the book series I used to teach J to read, so it's something very special for both of us. I must have read them 3 or 4 times now

@neil @babe every Pratchett fan will have a set of recommendations for you and I've really liked almost every book he wrote, but if forced to choose I'd recommend Night Watch, Hogfather, Reaper Man and Small Gods (and then force myself to stop typing more book names).

@neil @babe
Same here. I didn't really click with the writing voice at the beginning but I've recently seen someone say the writing gets noticeably better so I'm planning on trying again.
