Enjoying music, old school style. The DAC (Digital to Analog Converter) in these old iPods still do a better job than most Bluetooth codecs and headphone combinations, in my opinion. The combination of an iPod 6th gen and the AKG K92 is just perfect for my ears. (YMMV - Your Mileage May Vary, headphones are a highly individual thing. Impedance and preferences are variables to consider. My combination might not work for you)
@jwildeboer yep. Sad that it’s discontinued. But good they still work.
@jwildeboer awww that's amazing Jan!
I just wiped my old iPhone 6 (which has a regular audio jack) and put my entire music library on it... to use as an iPod.
I just figured out I could still add my own tracks to Apple Music even if they've been ensh*tt*fying for a few years, pushing subscriptions.
I miss the physical buttons of my old iPod though. I may purchase an old iPod as my Xmas present to myself 😅
The joy of enjoying music without being distracted by notifications, beeps and other sounds, with (especially in the case of LUX) impressive dynamics with more than enough but not overwhelming bass and the clean resolution of the mids and especially the highs — magic!
@_elena I was very lucky. I got this one a few years ago on eBay at €59. The original battery and 80GB hard drive still work reliably. So, so good. Get one!

@_elena I connected it to my M4 MacBook (yes, USB-C to 30 pin cables exist ;) and MacOS just opened a dialog box telling me an iPod has been found and what I would like to sync to it. Impressive long-term support ;)
@jwildeboer I'm so jealous! I used to have an iPod Classic 3rd gen which was a real beauty. I think I must have sold it years ago (plus it was probably only 15GB). It was such a beauty.
I see now that on eBay iPod classics sell for 200 Euros 😱 I need to set up an alert or something (I have a working iPod Touch 1st gen and an iPod Mini but their storage space is ridiculously small)
@jwildeboer I used to own a iPod Classic... but not any more 😢 On another note I started buying CDs again 💿
@_elena Hahaha. I seem to have a talent to be ahead of the curve by at least a year. iPods are all the rage again and have exploded in price. Just as Polaroid SX70 cameras did 5-10 years ago. I got three of them for around €5 and now they are €300+. No, I’m not selling :)
@jwildeboer amazing! (the iPod and Polaroids)
I just checked out Vinted for "iPod 3rd generation" and found two: the first on sale for 260 Euros and the second for 200 Euros. Gaaaaah 😭 It stings even more considering I OWNED one back in the day (what was I thinking giving up that beauty?)
I will wait for the right one to come along... for now I'll just enjoy my iPhone 6 as an iPod, with its proper audio jack 🥲
@jwildeboer P.S.: next time you have a hunch about something - especially photo-related - do let us know here! 😆
@_elena Canon AE-1s are all the rage. But people still underestimate Olympus 36mm cameras and especially the unbelievable quality of their lenses. And 15 years ago I bought a Mamiya RZ medium format with three lenses for €250 which is now valued at €6000. Oops.
@_elena And did you know — Alien was shot on modified Canon FD lenses. I got my collection of fixed and zooms a few years ago at around €10 per lens. I got an adapter to hook them up to my Blackmagic cameras and. Wow. Just wow. Now FDs are highly sought after and have exploded in price. Oops :)
But still. The vinyl of this album on my B&O 4500 sounds better. Far better. But that’s just me and my analog obsession ;) My neighbours might disagree, though. Those B&O (Beolab 6000 plus passive subwoofer) speakers can throw dynamic changes into the room without even a hint of a shrug ;)
@jwildeboer ok next time you have a hunch you write to me IMMEDIATELY, ok? 😅
My doc The Illusionists got lots of compliments for its cinematography. I shot it on a Canon 5D with 40-year-old Nikkor prime lenses (thanks to a Novoflex adaptor). I LOOOOVE old prime lenses
@_elena YES. They have this weird mixture of dreamy unsharpness that’s hard to notice and a colour representation that’s just wow. In very subtle ways. I do like the extreme sharpness and neutrality of modern lenses, that leave a lot of possibilities to post, but the warmth and emotion of old primes is more my world. There’s worlds to explore beyond REC709 :)
