CPython may go Rusty, but older platforms risk getting iced out

https://www.theregister.com/2025/11/19/cpython_may_use_rust/

Preliminary proposal is already provoking debate

<- by me on @theregister

@lproven @theregister Interesting. I may have to learn Rust basics at this rate. I was surprised to learn that Mac OS X on PowerPC is still a thing.

@lproven @theregister @ptribble We just talked about this, this does not bode well for Python on Tribblix.

@dan613 @theregister

Well, in the sense that it hasn't ceased to exist, but there have been no new updates in over 15 years.

@lproven @dan613 @theregister even Debian support on that platform must have stopped about a decade ago. (Still have one in my loft)

@lproven @theregister Liam do you have any leverage to get the reg’s cookie pop-up to be less dark-patterny?

@jmtd @lproven @theregister I still have a running Mac Cube PowerPC come to think of it.

@jmtd @theregister It had a cookie popup? I've never seen it. OTOH I just run "I don't care about cookies"... Because I don't.

There's an optical ticky-box in uBlock Origin to block them, I believe...

@jmtd @theregister @dan613 There's an unofficial Debian 12...

Adêlie officially supports both `powerpc` and `powerpc64`, that is, as opposed to the much more common `ppc64le`.

@lproven @theregister yeah, and sadly it's a particular egregious one, where to opt-out of everything you have to scroll and click 10 or so separate things.
