Highly recommend reading this story about a reporter casually finding out his wife is a world Tetris champion: https://archive.boston.com/news/globe/magazine/articles/2007/08/19/bizarro_world/

"It's funny," I told Flewin. "We have an old Nintendo Game Boy floating around the house, and Tetris is the only game we own. My wife will sometimes dig it out to play on airplanes and long car rides. She's weirdly good at it. She can get 500 or 600 lines, no problem."

What Flewin said next I will never forget.

"Oh, my!"

@misty I remember reading this; just so cool!

@lina She sounds amazingly cool and collected during the big attempt!

@misty I think the funniest part of this for me is hearing about andrewg holding the SMB record at a "perfect" 5:08 - as we now sit only 9 frames away from a "perfect" 4:54.265

@jrandomhacker Hahaha. How little we knew back in 2007......

@misty This is possibly the sweetest thing I've ever read!

Thanks for the breath of fresh air.

@notthatdelta Isn't it great? I'm glad you enjoyed!

@misty That was a DELIGHTFUL read.

@misty I could practically hear the Summoning Salt vaporwave music while reading this (I love this article every time it comes by)

Sadly she no longer has the record, which now sits at 915 lines. https://www.twingalaxies.com/records/voting-performances/250260-game-boy-game-boy-color-tetris-dx-marathon-mode-lines-915

@fluffy The fact she’s still in fifth all these years later is really impressive, especially since she never recontested it!

@misty Absolutely! I couldn't find the leaderboard though, the TG website is so awful

@fluffy It really is, huh?

@misty this was such a fun and incredible read, thank you for sharing!

@kestral Glad you enjoyed! It’s long been a fave, and nice to see so many other people liking it.

@misty wholesome af

@misty

Absolutely loved this - thanks

@misty Thanks for posting that. It was lovely!

@misty Here's the cover with her beaming, presumably having won. https://www.funspotnh.com/-Articles/pc-bizarroworld.htm

World Record or Bust!

THE SURREAL STORY OF ONE WOMAN'S SHOT AT VIDEO GAME SUPREMACY

BY BILLY BAKER

Cover image is Lori Baker grinning broadly. She's a young white woman with dark blonde in a side parting, wearing a green round neck t-shirt and a broad smile that shows her top teeth and gums. She's in front of a Tetris arcade machine.

@mattjhodgkinson I didn't realize it made the cover! That's great.

@misty haven't read that in a long long time!

casual misogyny

@misty great story, but oof this bit at the end:

Lori is laughing as Day declares her "the greatest Tetris player in the world," then turns to me to add, "And I must say, she's also the prettiest."

no matter how good you are at breaking records, remember that your most important job is to be pretty, ladies 🙃

casual misogyny

@twistylittlepassages Ugh, yeahhhhhh.

@misty Oh how neat. FunSpot is just a few hours from here, I should really get back there. I loved reading her story, wish there was a bit more from her in it.

@jessamyn Yes, agreed! I do get the impression from how she's described that she was a little aloof about the whole thing, seems like she took it in stride until the day of, but I wish I got a little more of her perspective.

@misty
I did a bit of creative searching on DuckDuckGo and came across this:

@misty i think this article may have been the inspiration for the episode of the TV series "Bones" S05E09 "The gamer in the grease" there's definitely some references in there that match up with the way the arcade is portrayed and some of the characters.

@quixoticgeek Looks like that aired ~2 years after the article was written, so feels very plausible it was fresh in a writer's mind!

@misty yeah. I had to check the publish date on the article and the episode. It's the image of the guy wearing a referee shirt that made me think of it. (Am currently binge watching the series.)
