(disclaimer: this opinion could perhaps have spent more time in the oven)

Over time the aspect of #Debian that has mattered to me most is the community, and how welcoming and awesome some of it is. This is something to be treasured.

On the other hand, this stands in stark contrast to the subtext of just about any intra-project communication I see now. We are not civil, kind, or patient with each other.

I think this is a serious problem. More so than most technical matters du jour.

@jmtd That's a shame. The community interactions are what I love about OSS too.
By it's nature OSS brings together more diverse people who will have differing views, motivation and not necessarily have to behave in a civil way depending on their employer (or lack of) so yeah it can be a problem. Ultimately that's what codes of conduct are for as long as there's a worthwhile process for arbitrating/upholding them.

@jmtd
I think the point is apt, for a lot of projects.

What helps ime is using a dialectical approach. There are always contradictions, in everything in the universe, pulling forward and back.

Identifying the primary contradiction and solving that catapults the project forward. In the case of most long term projects it is "we exist in a degenerating competitive society that values aggressiveness and it seeps into the project."

Make an awareness group that tackles this and you should be ok.
