Please, I beg, if you're posting about a new release of the cool thing you made, include a small description of what it is and what it does.

It's hard to boost "libencarbulator turbo++ 2.8a release is now available! Now supports configuring reticulation of splines" in a vacuum, and I want nothing more than to boost the cool thing you made

@mr_daemon if the profile and the website and the link to the release explain it, does the toot really need it?

I see it as a trade-off between more noise for those who know (which are probably most followers) and the reduced effort for those who don't know. The hope is that the latter can find out easily.

Example is the last release announcement of @teamtype where we didn't include the explanation. I'm open to include it in the future, but it's not yet 100% clear to me that that's better.

> if the profile and the website and the link to the release explain it, does the toot really need it?

Yes, absolutely.

@mr_daemon this, but also: the number of encarbulator dot com websites I've seen that also do not tell you what it is/does on the main page, or even anywhere within a click or two, is too damn high!

@wez Yeah, multiple frameworks are like this. Tells you all about the cool features, but you have no idea wtf it is for until you find the examples and then go `OH it's a task queue` or whatever.

@mr_daemon @wez it's even worse now since most websites first blast you in the face about some AI bullshit they put in

@Chase @mr_daemon @wez that’s good though because it serves as an immediate “you’re out”.

@mr_daemon
I often find myself saying "but what does it do?", when reading the README of projects hosted on Git**b. I generally then move on to some other task.

@mr_daemon @retrotechshop
Also don't say "Our new product [ThisThing] is available - it's like [ThatThing*]" - *I've never heard of ThatThing either, so saying it's "like" it is telling me nothing. 🙄

@SmartmanApps
The only exception where that makes sense is if its sole purpose is to be like ThatThing. But then you phrase it differently.

"ThisThing, a free software alternative of the proprietary ThatThing, is now available!"

Other than that, yeah, I agree.
