i still hate the non-existence of modern non-smart TVs

i don't want a built-in network capable computer on my tv running some shitty proprietary android interface

computer monitors aren't really an option because a 55" computer monitor either doesn't exist or costs over a thousand bucks

@navi I wouldn't mind if the hardware was documented and I could flash it

@toast i would just rip it out, since i'll have my own thin clients driving the thing

but i can't do that either because the display drivers are very likely embedded there

@navi that's why I just got myself glasses with screens (Xreal Air). You plug in USB-C and get video, you can also enable stereoscopic mode and use 3DoF) to have multiple virtual displays apparently (but haven't tried that).

Not optimal if you don't live alone though, there are ~42' monitors but AFAIK not larger

@elly i live with wifey, the main point of the tv is to watch things together -- if i lived alone i'd probably be fine by sitting in a desk with a usual computer monitor

@navi ah yeah, that makes sense then. Maybe some kind of projector (although modern ones also seem to have those stupid "features")?

@elly i could look into it, though i have doubts if it would a) work well for gaming, and b) work on a non-dark room (last time i used a projector was about a decade ago...)

just give me the drivers and let me run w.e. I want on there lol

business/commercial tvs are your only option, something like the samsung befx-h series

but even those are listed with "smart tv - tizen OS"...

@whynothugo the computer monitors that size are also sold as "high end monitors", i don't need 250hz refresh rate on my living room tv

1440p or 4k, 60hz or maybe 120hz max

@navi @rose Makes me wonder if Tizen is still as hackable as it was ~10 years ago thanks to it's maemo/meego base, but well wouldn't count on that too much.

oh yeah i misremembered, even the befx-h series have to be explicitly bought as business models, which pumps the price up even more
but generally just searching for "commercial tv" or "business tv" should get you somewhere, maybe even just searching "non smart tv" on amazon and checking the models that come up

@rose @navi the larger issue with the business ones are that you get really really bad panels for general media consumption considering the price you dump into it. They're basically made to display spreadsheets and that's about it, at that point it's better to buy one of the consumer ones and isolate it from the internet as much as possible, sadly enough.

@xian @rose @navi even things like digital signage TVs/monitors will have excellent color accuracy (they're meant to display ads after all lmao) but usually piss poor response times

@novenary @rose @navi true. I guess it depends on what your panel needs are, i wanted OLED (yay old games) and then basically all of those are off the record.

oled for me would be a plus, but mostly something high res to watch movies and play party or single player games (so the very bad response times is a no go, if it was just a lil bad it'd be okay maybe)
