Anybody know where the unsubscribe link to the preschool disease-of-the-month club is? I want out lol

@azonenberg from my father: stop eating after them

@gfaster doesn't help with respiratory bugs which is most of what she's bringing home.

We wear masks when going out as a family but she won't keep one on at school when we're not around. The school has air cleaners which probably helps, and we have a bunch at home, but most of the time she takes a bug home the rest of the family gets it a day or two later because she's in our face so much.

@azonenberg petition the school to install better ventilation and filtration

@azonenberg ah saw your note on the other reply. I guess there's always home schooling?

@aeva they already have a bunch of air cleaners but preschoolers have bad hygiene and are constantly hugging and jumping in each others faces so there are limits as to how much room level filtration can help. They also spend a lot of time outside.

From what the teachers tell me the kids actually get sick a lot less often than at other schools without such precautions.

But getting sick once a month after years of basically never being sick... Definitely sucks lol

@aeva wife doesn't want to, and I can't teach her everything myself while also working.

Hoping when she's a bit older she'll have slightly improved hygiene...

@aeva but yeah this sucks I've been barely able to get off the couch all weekend, slept on and off for like 20 hours, can't sleep in my own bed because if i lie flat my nose clogs to the point I can't breathe out it.

At least the fever and alternating swimming in sweat and shivering seems to be over and the sore throat isn't as bad. This is the second or third nightmare cold she's given us that tested negative for covid but absolutely knocked us on our asses

@azonenberg Extreme PPE lol

I read last week that pediatricians have the strongest immune response, probably followed closely by teachers.

@0h00000000 lol i would believe it with how many sick kids they see.

Hopefully when she's a bit older we can convince her that keeping a mask on at school will help keep us all from getting sick, and then we can play with her more rather than being half dead on the couch lol

@azonenberg
Just use your hand, foot, and mouth.

@FritzAdalis with kids this age it'd be more likely foot-in-mouth disease

@azonenberg
One interesting thing about getting hfm in my [mumble]s is all the skin on my soles cracked and fell off (painful) but then I had brand new feet with no callouses.

@azonenberg I was just thinking, it's kinda like nature's way of pen testing.

I don't think a mask would help much at school, when they are sitting at a desk all day in a room full of airborne pathogens. It'd have to be a respirator or something. At a grocery store where you are moving and pathogen clouds are are transient, sure I think it would help.

Another way to look at it, it's a feature not a bug, exposure strengthens immune systems vs living in a bubble. IDK, still sucks though.

@azonenberg oh yeah that keeps happening until they’re like 4 or 5 and they stop licking each other’s boogers

@jpm she's four and a half so hopefully there's some progress soon lol

@azonenberg yeah we found up until about 3 or 4 it’s every 2 weeks, after 4 it drops to about monthly, then when Little Miss 7 started school at about age 5 it was down to once every second month

@azonenberg partial answer: after pre-school. But also, consider wearing respirators less to sync back with the global pathogen pool. I found that by having some exposure, but masking in more contained areas such as public transportation, leaves me largely healthy all year round.

The problem you have at home is you are not synced, and then have a high load near you constantly.

Hinges on having ALL the vaccines, but I don't think you will have problems there.

@azonenberg
Remember though that kids also need exposure to pathogens in order for them to build a healthy immune system that has been exposed to them and therefore knows how to fight them.

Masking all the time makes that difficult.

@wouter @0h00000000 @azonenberg Despite immunology being much more complicated than we understand, IIRC the prevailing literature when I did my undergrad was that this is true, however it generally only applies between the ages of 0-1 years old. Afterwards there isn't any new special immunity.

@purpleidea @wouter @0h00000000 also afaik common rhinoviruses and coronaviruses causing cold tend to not produce long lasting immunity anyway, i.e. you can get reinfected with the same bug after a few months

@azonenberg did far uvc ever pan out as safe and effective?

@icb it seems promising as a supplement to filtration but no room level air treatment will help preschoolers constantly cuddling and coughing and breathing in everyone's faces

@azonenberg installed at daycare might keep her from bringing it home in the first place

@icb I'm talking about spread at preschool when the kids are all over each other and have no concept of personal space
