THREAD: A heat-pump tumble dryer could save households more than £700
Lots of overblown reaction to govt phasing out standard dryers – reminds me of when 2009 Mail frontpage wailed about "beloved" incandescent bulbs
But heat pump dryers are just a much better technology

Daily Mail, Jan 2009 on the "great lightbulb revolt"
"Millions of Britons are finally waking up to the fact that their beloved lightbulbs will disappear…"
Since then, LEDs helped UK cut peak power demand by equiv of 2x nuclear power plants (!)

But now the govt is coming for your "traditional" tumble dryer 🙀🙀🙀
These are to be "stamped out", says the Telegraph, to help cut carbon emissions
Scary stuff! I can almost feel the boot on my throat

So I took a look on currys.co.uk (other retailers are available)
I picked the cheapest "traditional" tumble dryer – £190
…and then the cheapest heat-pump model – £239
Then I worked out standardised running costs for 10kg/week of drying…

Guess what? The heat pump model costs more to buy, but pays that back in spades
Cost of ownership after one year:
£282 cheapest "traditional" dryer
£281 cheapest heat-pump dryer
After 15yrs, the heat-pump dryer saves more than £700
How awful!

@drsimevans and they’re still improving. Our 2008 heatpump dryer was using 2kwh per session before we had to replace it. Our recent one only 0.5kwh.
If we keep doing this, it will eventually make the power plant companies go out of business!! Scandalous!!!1eleven!
