As much as I like #Xfce, posting screenshots of one's desktop, or "ricing" is mostly boring as hell. YMMV. *shrug*

I think that the term originated in car culture where people would modify their cars by putting spoilers, airfoils, and loud exhausts among other things on their cars to make them appear like custom hot rods.
Somehow it spilled over to modifying one's computer desktop with themes, colors, and desktop backgrounds to seem cool.
The term has been around for a decade+ at least.

@kevinbowen mmm… that doesn't really tell me why "ricing". Did they adhere the spoilers with a glue made from rice starch or something? :-)

I think that it originated with modifiying Asian/Japanese cars. Hence, "ricing".

I'm not remotely a car person; but, I probably first heard the term years ago in reference to modding Toyotas or Mazdas or whatever and putting pointless airfoils on them or modifying their exhaust systems to be obnoxiously loud.
Unfortunately, the term was picked up by people customising their desktops.
