there should be a word for that specific experience where you need to do a computer task you've done a couple times before, but it turns out they've made it way more annoying since the last time you did it

coming back to a project I've built before (and even sold hardware for!) only to discover their main repo is now partially vibe coded AND you have to install Nix to build it now

yes lemme just curl the bash script to sudo bash, that's the way we install things on linux after all

@foone probably some german compound word. Rückwärtsgerichtetedigitalebelästigung

(past/backwardsdigitalannoyance)

instructions: "just run nix build!"

actual nix:
$ nix build
error: experimental Nix feature 'nix-command' is disabled; add '--extra-experimental-features nix-command' to enable it

@foone ensysiphication

@foone lol - wait, isn’t this called “using a new version”?

it's really great that this python script now requires me to run a nix daemon to use it

definitely an improvement on the previous version where you had to, like, set up a virtualenv and compile a module

if I was like 15% more angry and spiteful I'd be forking this software and the other software it relies on.

but I'm not, so I'll just complain instead

@foone
Nope nope nope.

@foone the slopmachine told them to rely on the Nix daemon

it turns out mid-migraine is not the best time to do linux software installation

@foone is there really any better time?

I also like how Nixifying this program has made it take much longer to launch, which is just great because I already was annoyed at how slowly it launches, given that one of the required maneuvers is to repeatedly launch it as you binary-search the starting parameters

@foone Shout out to "Devkitpro" that specifically wires their toolchain to only work on *Arch* of all fucking things

Exact same kind of headassery

@foone One lightly wonders whether the latter caused the former.

@foone "enhittification time wastage" perhaps? Or if you want to write it in a single word, you could write it in Swedish: "enshittifieringstidsslöseri".

@foone redneck package manager

hmm, this VM will finish processing in...
lemme do some math. 1.4 frames per second, 11000*6 frames, uh... 6 days?

@aschmitz nah, I was already getting the migraine when I foolishly decided that now was the time to try and do this

@foone I've triggered a migraine doing that. I hope you feel better soon!

going to my vm host, bowl in hand, going "please ma'am, can I have some more cores?"

@foone Linux Users: "Windows users are so stupid, just downloading and installing exes they don't know they can trust."
Also Linux Users: *Pipes bash scripts direct from some person's github to install fancy hyprland themes or PS1 prompt customizations*

@foone I’d offer a VM with a ton of fast cores, but I bet it’s more work to set everything up again rather than just wait six days.

@AnachronistJohn yeah, and I'd need to upload half a terabyte of input files first, and that's not exactly fast

NOPE! even with more cores, it's too slow.

So... I guess I'm doing this on my laptop and them copying over the output

@foone I have a very large computer in my livingroom not doing anything. I wonder how long it would take it.

@foone enfuckification

@foone This feels enshittification-adjacent, but not quite the same thing.

@foone

Windows?

@foone Just today I noticed Google has changed all the Workspace icons.

Again ...

@foone nix and python are a conspiracy from big cpu and big devops

@foone spite is a powerful force for software creation. But complaining is an important safety valve that regulates how much time the spite can commit us to.

@foone "Atlassian"?

@foone havent i heard this somewhere ?

@foone "Microsoft"

@foone everytime I've tried to touch nix for literally anything it's never worked correctly.

@foone

"Innovexations"?

@foone mid-migraine isn't the best time for anything.
Have you tried Sumatriptan (Imitrexᵀᴹ)? Changed my life. Feel a migraine, take a pill, be back to normal 20-30 minutes later...

@spaceinvader god, running a bash script off a 4chan meme! that is really some peak bad idea.

(fun fact: there was a 4chan-based worm a while back that I worked on mitigating, and it basically was this sort of thing. run these commands for Free Candy. And if you did, you found your computer was now posting the image back to 4chan in the background)

@foone I have many bad ideas, some of which I have actually made into reality, and some I have shown to others who then pleaded with me to leave the repositories set to “private”

But! The intrusive thoughts keep creeping in and tempting me to toggle them to public.

This was just a funny meme that lives in my head rent-free whenever I see `curl … | sudo bash`

@foone it should be a German word, obviously

@foone bit blight

@foone wait how can something require nix to build, it should always be possible to just do whatever nix is automating manually

@foone Because of the way German works, I’m sure there is a German word for that. English is clumsier, requiring us to say something like, “It was perfect, so they fixed it,” or, “Fucking updates.”

@foone it’s probably fusioning. Like that 3D modelling program from Autod**k. Literally every time I use it I have to spend 20 minutes wondering if I’ve had an aneurysm or if they’ve just moved a button/completely changed how you do something.

RE: https://digipres.club/@foone/116598103243603562

@foone I believe the term is one of two, depending on specifics of context. It's probably either:

1. Dependency Bloat
2. Enshitification

RT: https://digipres.club/users/foone/statuses/116598103243603562

@foone We could call it a PEP update.

@foone Teams. That’s the word

@foone enshittification?
