Every year, the HDMI Consortium meets with hardware manufacturers to plan where to place HDMI ports on monitors. Through a rigorous series of testing, they ensure that each monitor has its port locations optimized to be impossible to plug the HDMI cable in without turning the whole monitor around and eyeballing the port like some kind of spaceship docking procedure.

When they have all agreed on the best location, they go out for pizza.

@Dio9sys After lunch, they send their findings to the USB Implementers Forum.

@Dio9sys they also discuss, what select few devices are gonna have the hdmi ports upside down for even more confusion blobcat
(i have seen single graphics cards with ports in 180° rotation to each other) blobcatoh

@CIMB4 @Dio9sys this too is yuri

They also have to force distance even while flat VESA wall mounts are available, force the Consumer to screw boards between vesa and wall.

@TajuyanTachyon @Dio9sys wait your ports point directly out the back? What is this new level of sadism? They don't even point to the side or down? You need right angle connectors... This has got to be so they can hack the thinness specification.

@theeclecticdyslexic On side, it's quite easy to access unless you have multiple screens close to each other on a small desk… Angled connectors can be an option if you don't need to unplug/replug it often (normal, not portable, screens, no "hot desking/flex office" bullshit…)

Most screen have the fucking port under de screen, with random orientation¹ that you need to check/not forget about…

1. No USB C doesn't resolve it because in some cases, it's NOT reversible…

@Dio9sys
It feels to me more like they figure out where the best possible location would be for the cable to be plugged in without effort, and then make a standard that allows for anything but that location.
