the largest fear I have is literally developing dementia. I would not want to continue existing in such a state, and hope that my friends and family would support me in seeking euthanasia in such a scenario.

I should probably also set up a family office or something

@ariadne unfortunately they would not be able to legally. all euthanasia legislation i've seen has a "of sound mind" requirement.

@aburka no I mean I have a reasonably sized nestegg, stock holdings from various tech companies I've worked for, etc. advanced directive is part of the overall package but really I need to figure out what happens in general

@ariadne @aburka you want to talk with a good estate attorney. They will help you with not just a will but setting up medical directives, power of attorney etc. and can advise you on how to best protect your assets and set them up for your heirs (or whatever organization you want to get them in the future)

A family office is typically for folks with $100M+ (or so I’ve heard - I do know a few families with them). But it’s very common (especially in the Bay Area) to have a revocable trust

@ariadne you realize that’s how these things start right? fear of death / being forgotten leading to procreation, and at a higher level, setting up mechanisms of attribution / control to make sure “your ways are not forgotten”

@ariadne @aburka honestly a good attorney makes the process pretty straightforward.

(And giving away your assets is a real option - lots of people make it their goal before they die to have largely given away their assets while they are still around to choose how to have an impact)

But yeah it’s definitely in the “serious adulting” category of life tasks.

@lvmbdv_was_taken like, I have no fear of death. I had a near-death experience where I had pneumonia as a complication of catching the flu which was particularly nasty in 2018.

losing my cognitive ability, however, is a dealbreaker

@ariadne i highly recommend hedging against that impulse with a bit of eastern philosophy, for total wellbeing

@lvmbdv_was_taken I mean there's certainly truth to that, and for the most part it's not really about the ego, but just about basic dignity. quantity of life is meaningless if quality is zero.

life was simple back then: if I wanted to go somewhere I just snuck on board a freight train like a gremlin

@ariadne @mensrea It depends on state law. In CA I could specify when to discontinue life support and put in a DNR/no-heroic-measures order, but not conditions for actual euthanasia. WA may have other options.

My brush with the afterlife had the same cause as you: pneumonia. 0 stars, would not buy again. Though the memories of my stay filtered through the coma are... trippy.

People should only have kids because they want to be parents and they want to have kids.
