When my partner's sister was in college, she had a roommate who was a princess in some minor European nobility. The princess part doesn't really matter -- she was very nice -- except for the implied life of privilege.

One day, the princess was going to the grocery store and asked if anyone needed anything. "Potatoes please!".

When the princess returned, she said "I'm very sorry, but the potatoes were all dirty".

I think of her every year while harvesting ...

a bowl with dirty potatoes.
The white potatoes are called Charlotte, the purple are Purple Vikings.

@colo_lee When we were selling potatoes at the farmer's market one year, this woman said loudly to her friend in an absolutely disgusted tone "These potatoes look like they just came out of the GROUND"

And I think about that every time I harvest our potatoes! (Potato harvest a ways off here in Saskatchewan still.)

@sundogplanets @colo_lee You mean, potatoes don't grow on trees?!? 🤪

@ai6yr @colo_lee We also had people regularly ask if anyone at the farmer's market was selling bananas. In Canada. (There are many reasons why we don't do farmer's markets anymore...)

@sundogplanets @colo_lee LOL. Once heard someone complaining loudly at an apple vendor (in summer) at the farmer's market when they were asking when the apples were picked, and the vendor had to explain they were picked in fall and kept in cold storage and brought out for the market out of season.

@sundogplanets and that's the best potato. That just came out of the ground

@sundogplanets
OMG! Those potatoes look like they came out of the Ground! Yuck!

I'll add that to my dirt meditation when we harvest pos.

This was the first round of early pos: some Charlottes and some Purple Vikings. Plenty more to come ...

@sundogplanets @ai6yr @colo_lee but, wait!
I was told we cannot bring bananas across the WA-BC border to protect the extensive banana plantations in BC!

@sundogplanets @ai6yr @colo_lee

Now I am unpleasantly reminded of the Trump apologists who claim to think that the United States can grow a lot of bananas or coffee or whatever other tropical crop.

@sundogplanets I send you this link with tongue in cheek because I realise that this place is an exception. It is so exceptionally exceptional that the word exception is really inadequate. But, here it is: https://arkopia.ca/homestead/ for bananas grown in Saskatchewan 😜

@sundogplanets @ai6yr @colo_lee it could happen with the help of Reflect Orbital ... Enhancing farmers markets everywhere!

@znoteer WHAT I had no idea this existed!! Definitely going to watch some of these videos later!

@sundogplanets And, they are further from the equator than you! New project idea for your farm maybe? 🤔 Imagine those waffles with fresh bananas in addition to the raspberries, in winter,..... 😋 🤩
