Apparently maintaining sanity between kernel versions and built packages for i915kms GPUs is insanely broken in . This was not an issue before . I suspect other third party kmods are also having issues.

Heaven help you if you build locally with poudriere.

And yes, I realize that pkgbase is still essentially beta. But holy fucking shit, my laptop never kernel paniced before this. At worst, X failed to start without some tweaks.

I was considering NetBSD, because NetBSD supports ZFS. But, not on root, not without significant tomfoolery. Also fun fact, NetBSD's ISO installer _hates_ both my iODD, and Ventoy.

So, I'm waiting for my latest poudriere build to finish. If I can't get X back, I'm going back to OpenBSD on laptops.

I'll miss ZFS, but I need stability more.

Bring on the ducking dogpile, I am sure I'm holding your pet project the wrong way.

os shenannigans.

@nuintari slowly I think 9front are becoming the only viable OS, cause they didn't take themselves seriously to begin with.
And They have anti-nazi-baners on the front page…

@nuintari is fine if you don't need Bluetooth. flan_thumbs

@nuintari can you be more specific which repo are you using ? kmods and pkgbase are 2 different things not connected, the kmods are built for every single version supported of freebsd and provided in its own repo exactly so you don t get incompatible KBI.

@nuintari Sorry I don't mean to tell you you're holding it the wrong way, but I avoid ZFS on root on any system that doesn't have native kernel modules for it (like Debian, which I use pretty much everywhere), it just makes worst-case scenarios so much easier to deal with.

@_bapt_ I've tried every reasonable possible combination between locally built, and "official" packages, and every possible combo between them all.

My laptop breaks more often than not.

I'm not trying to kick your dog or anything, I'm just tired of shit being broke all the the time.

@nuintari Ventoy being very finicky with BSD installers and ime anything non-Linux installer has been the main reason I stopped trying to use Ventoy as an installer panacea as the changes are also needed on Ventoy side to support that use case and it seems a non-priority for the project.

@hoanga I rarely resort to Ventoy, but when Windows, Linux, BSD, and every possible alternative OS hates my guts?

Yeah.... UEFI, makes me do weird shit.

I fucking hate the world we have created, but here we are.

@nuintari if only NetBSD did native encrypted ZFS root and nfsv4...

@nuintari without specific there is nothing we can fix, we are building (and I know as I am the one running them) builds of the kmods for every single support KBI no matter if you use pkgbase or not, hence why I am asking for specific about your case.
