I've also raised a merge request to update the metadata on #BananaHackers (once and for all!) but don't worry, I've set up redirects in the meantime so even though the file name is 0.2.0 you will in fact be downloading 1.0.0

The update replaces the hardcoded version number in the download file name with "latest" so I can update that to redirect to the latest version without having to go through the whole MR routine each time (as I should've done to start with)

Hey I'm using the same icon pack on the website as I recently started using on the app itself. What a coincidence!

I say "coincidence" because I thought I'd only discovered the icon pack for the first time recently when I added it to the app. Turns out my past self had already discovered it a year ago when making the website 😮

Yeah KaiOS is not the greatest operating system to work with. Unfortunately GerdaOS is abandoned, and there was a plan to have Project Pris based on a newer KaiOS version but war broke out in the country of the main person behind it (Luxferre)

I've seen some kind of hacks available for KaiOS 3, though nothing as good as KaiOS 2. I'm still using KaiOS 2 (on a Nokia 2720 Flip). There's also KaiOS 4 now, which supports copy/paste; I'm looking forward to that

@laru I read that postmarketOS works on my phone, but with many drivers missing (including basic things like calls) so I didn't try it as this is my primary phone. But I think postmarketOS is the future. Since Convo and other KaiOS apps are written mostly in HTML/CSS/JS they can be ported easily to other platforms.

If we had postmarketOS devices running webapps with @servo that would be awesome! (And of course we'd be able to write native apps too for more performance)

@laru I'm hoping to soon also try Convo on devices like the Mecha Comet by @mechasystems which has physical buttons in addition to a touchscreen. The main difference between KaiOS apps and smartphone/desktop apps, besides needing to be very lightweight, is that you've got to support navigating to everything with just buttons

Actually, even KaiOS misses things; for example when I need to sign in to a WiFi network is says "tap here for options" even though there's no way for me to tap

@debacle oh yeah! That's a quicker way to do things, and I just remembered that adding support for setting up gateways in-app (mostly ad-hoc commands, I think) is one of the first things I plan to do once the NLnet project is over 🛷

Damn, I kind of want a KaiOS phone now. Maybe when my samsung s7 dies! Is E2EE planned?

@nicoco yep, E2EE works already! OMEMO1 with blind trust that is. It's currently on by default and you can choose to toggle it on/off per chat while texting

It's currently whatever's implemented in the headless version of Converse.js v12, so I still need to add a UI for things like checking your fingerprint and managing other peoples' keys. But it "more or less works" with blind trust for now

Once I get around to a v13 update, OMEMO2 should be working too (fingers crossed)! 🤓

@nicoco and yes I'd say it's definitely worth picking up a KaiOS phone if you get your hands on one, at least to play with (but I may be biased 😉)

Yeah I don't know the bananahackers people all that well because I don't use Discord much. In fact I mainly use it to get in touch with the bananahackers community, and the main app I use is Kori (by Cyan) 🙃 I see @farooqkz a lot on the Fediverse though

Yeah lol I still haven't managed to get my hands on a KaiOS 3 device. But I'm still eager for 4. We KaiOS users learn to be very patient haha 🫠

@laru yeah I'd definitely go for native apps if I could. It doesn't make sense to me that most phone platforms are restricted to writing apps only in a certain way: there's no good reason it can't allow you to use anything, like in desktop computers. I think most KaiOS users don't really like KaiOS; we just use it because there's the best option available 😕

@qugalet I heard they do support adding an LTE modem! Not sure what exactly one can do with it, but let me wait for @mechasystems themselves to respond. Yeah the Mecha Comet is on my wishlist too 😋
