POLL: I'm thinking about designing a 3D thing to 3D print. What software (that isn't on a web browser) should I learn a bit about?

@veronica Both have more of a learning curve than I'd like right now, unfortunately. Would love to hear about non-web alternatives.

@veronica I'm a big fan of SCAD, and haved used OpenSCAD quite a bit, but it's not for everyone.

I thought there was some recent controversy with it but I can't seem to find it now or recall what it was.

@veronica Not a 3D printing person, but I've done some light CAD-ish stuff in Blender (and worked on BRL-CAD a bit) and the consensus back then (3-4 years ago) was that it's not really good for CAD. At its heart it's for artistic rendering with polygon, whereas CAD software uses boundary representation. That basically means Blender can't natively represent curved surfaces. (It sort of can, but it's bad at it.)
I took a quick look into what's available now and it looks like there is an addon for Blender that's gaining some steam (CAD Sketcher), but it's 2D only and based on how it describes itself, I'd put it somewhere between alpha and beta quality.
So if you want to model some tabletop minis and don't care if they aren't accurate to the micron, Blender might be the right choice. Otherwise go with a dedicated CAD software. Just not BRL-CAD. neofox_laugh_sweat

@veronica Isn’t FreeCAD advocating for AI slop now?

I’m starting to think the extent of my 3D modeling is going pivot towards use of a mallet, a set of chisels and a nice block of wood.

@Random_Seed So this is an example of a comment that isn't helpful.

I was asking a question, and instead of an answer, you took the opportunity to make a joke. Had you suggested a slop-free alternative, it would have been a helpful comment.

In my case, I literally need to model something that must be made on a 3D printer, therefore I'm going to need to do some modeling. If you don't have a practical "something else", you probably should not have written it in a comment.

@veronica Well, replying to something that, for the love of god, is not “helping” you, and yourself, and no one else, doesn’t seem very helpful either. So yeah, we’re even.

@Random_Seed

me: [asks a question]
you: [makes a joke]
me: "that's not super helpful"
you: "I guess we're even then"

lolololol

@veronica I had great success designing a electric plug in Solvespace. It is very minimal, but does everything it needs to. It does parametric design, and constraint solving; their docs are pretty good, too. FreeCAD just never clicked for me tbh.

@veronica You: [asks a question]
Me: [makes concerned query regarding what 3D software is feasible. Expresses disillusionment in the tech industry.]
You: "You invaded my kingdom, off with his head in the town square. This is my party wah."
Me: "That sure as hell wasn’t a good use of your time. One could even say “unhelpful”. If I’m unhelpful, and you’re unhelpful, I guess we're even then"
You: “I don’t want to admit it but you got me there. Now I’m even more angry, you were funny again.”

@Random_Seed ok you seem upset

@Random_Seed also, what, are you boosting each reply of mine? lol maybe you should take a break
