Edit: looks like it’s been shuttered.

pyconf dot org is a fake event, a scam.

Notes:

- Domain registered after CFP closed.

- Venue doesn't admit its existence: https://fortmason.org/events/

- AI gen headshots, and speakers who aren't, in 100% of the the companies my network can see into, employees at those companies and never have been. Those people don't exist.

A couple of the listed "sponsors'" corporate legal teams have already been advised and word is they're furious.

Strongly dislike the fact that conference websites, like apparently everything else, are now a deepfake medium.

@mhoye that looks so (superficially) convincing, too.

@mhoye Wow, that's a pretty interesting way to take $99 from people. Presumably the payment processor is the only 'real' thing there.

@mhoye Can confirm that the PSF has nothing to do with this.

@mhoye same as https://www. cppconf.com, which seems not to exist anymore...

@mhoye Shit. someone quick make a webpage for an AI con that doesn't exist so we can scam AI bros!

@mhoye Seems gone now.

@ben good.

@mhoye
It's often a good idea to use a credit card to pay for your registration, because you can dispute charges if there are any problems. If anyone loses money, it will be the credit card processor. That's an important part of what the fees associated with the credit card are paying for: vetting vendors to make sure they are legitimate and eating fraudulent charges when the vetting fails.

@joeyh

And the website has gone dark (which is good!). This seems like an boilerplate scam to steal money from technology types.
