Libraries are the only data centers I want.

Cartoon in which a librarian, arms crossed in front of a library, tells a robot standing in front of a data center, “We were the original data centers and people liked us!”

I logged in to LinkedIn to see a page full of people praising DHH, got mad, and wrote this. Less than 12 hours later I got an email telling me "Your post doesn’t comply with our Professional Community Policies on bullying and harassment. It’s been removed from LinkedIn and only you can access it."

Big tech is more and more mask-off every day.

A LinkedIn post from me that reads "DHH is openly a Nazi. You should not promote anything he is doing or relay his opinions on software development. It is shocking to me when I open this app and see people casually discussing his opinions on AI or interface design or whatever, as if he were a "thought leader". He is an open advocate for mass murder. It doesn't matter what else he thinks, do not promote his ideas." followed by the text "Only you can see this post because this content goes against our Professional Community Policies."

@ivanhoe On my virtual console, it does display, but in 16 colours only, which looks quite horrible. In theory you could run it under fbterm or kmscon, but I tried these and results.... vary. I don't intend to run the TUI-based installer on bare VCs, I think the world has (sadly) given up on them. So the plan is to run it on a minimal Wayland session on Linux-based systems and in a minimal Xorg session on other unixy operating systems (NetBSD, RavynOS, etc)

@ivanhoe It looks like that in all modern terminal emulators (kitty, iTerm2, xterm, Windows Terminal, foot, etc). In other terminals, like VTE-based terminals that don't (yet) support images, it falls back to drawing the image using whatever characters it can find with the available colour pallette (screenshot attached of what it looks like in gnome-terminal). @josch @Anarcat There was a lightning talk at DebConf25 with an early demo of it, and a longer talk at Debconf26 with the first version that can kind of actually install a system: https://debconf26.debconf.org/talks/6-is-it-even-possible-to-build-a-truly-universal-system-installer/

After some more toying around... really amazing what you can do with a TUI these days.

@Anarcat Yep, it's Yet Another System Installer as olasd said. Might eventually get another name. It's my attempt at fixing all the problems with current installers, it's still about a month or two since it will be ready for a first public alpha, although there's a snapshot in testing that almost kind of works.

When I started thinking about the design of the Yasi GUI, my plan was always to make it adaptable to a TUI app. Now that I have some time to toy around with Textual in earnest, I'm quite excited by the results.

When I was little, people told me that as I get older I'll get more conservative in my views. I'm not sure if it's out of stubbornness or just generally trying to be a good human being, but I believe they were proved wrong.

What surprises me the most recently, though, is how much I suddenly care about pronouns (I didn't see that one coming).

PLEASE. For the love of all that's good in the world, stop referring to AIs as she/her/he/him. They are not people and don't have genders. It's an it.

@dunderhead @dysfun Every work use case I have ever seen can be better done with scripting than with AI.

Today Igalia turns 25.

In September 2001, ten engineers from the University of A Coruña started a company with no outside investors, no managers, and no intention of ever appointing any.

There are now close to 200 of us, spread across the world. The arrangement has not changed: no managers, no shareholders, and everything we build left where anyone can use it.

Here is to the next twenty-five.

Given its extremely high energy and water consumption, the increased minimum system requirements driving premature hardware obsolescence, among other very problematic social and political issues, genAI/LLMs are not compatible with the values and goals of KDE Eco.

KDE is a diverse community and the opinions and projects of some KDE contributors are not representative of the entire community or KDE Eco projects.

@mikegalsworthy They're not calling it BRENTER!?

The more information emerges about the health hazards after 9/11 in New York City, the worse it gets. Democracy Now hosts a roundtable talking to people who has attempted to speak up about this over the last 25 years: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DzrR0AlU-1Y

'Phonetic' is not.
'Abbreviation' is 12 letters.
'Thesaurus' doesn't have a synonym.
'Monosyllabic' has five syllables.
'Hyphenated’ isn't, but ‘non-hyphenated’ is.

Say what you will about English, but it has a sense of humour.

@historyofpunkrock Never heard of them, will give them a listen!

The classic XKCD dependency stack cartoon, but relabeled. The image shows a huge pile of boxes representing "all modern digital infrastructure" precariously balanced atop each other. A label at the right (ha!) says "A project led by a guy who then turns out to be a fascist" and arrows point to a small box sitting on top of many others. Another label at the right says "Where corporate money goes", with three arrows pointing at the small project led by a guy who then turns out to be a fascist
