If it ain't fun, you're not doing it right.

FreeBSD still outperforms anything Linux can throw at it at the high end though.

And https://people.freebsd.org/~gallatin/talks/OpenFest2023.pdf talks about 800Gb/s servers, where performance matters.

@miekg
In fact, that article states that 'contributing upstream' is part of what Netflix considers core to its success in using FreeBSD, which basically negates any so called benefit you might have in not being bound by the GPL...
@purpleidea @safigo

@miekg
Don't think they're available, no.

The best I know of is https://freebsdfoundation.org/end-user-stories/netflix-case-study/

No, Debian's kFreeBSD port is dead dead dead.
@safigo @purpleidea

@purpleidea
They've given talks on how using FreeBSD gives them technological advantages over and above what Linux could give them.

Could the license be considered an advantage by their business people? Maybe. But I don't believe it's their only reason, or even their main reason.

The Belgian recepy:

Peel potatoes.

Cut potatoes into something fry shaped. Preferably with a tool to do so if you want to save time, but with a sharp knife works too.

Deep-fry at 160°C until soft throughout.

Let cool to room temperature (even if you want to eat them the same day).

If you want to marinade, do so now (but I wouldn't).

Deep-fry at 180°C until golden brown (and yummy crusted)

Serve and eat.

@safigo
Netflix uses FreeBSD on all its edge systems. FreeBSD -CURRENT, even.

Encoding a date of birth is so generic, and will be at the base of literally anything that tries to do any type of age related stuff that it's quite the stretch to call it "premature"...

What you do with that encoded date of birth and how you expose that, sure.

But storing it? Come now.

LOL this is hilarious! Location of French aircraft carrier revealed by sailor's Strava run log.

Screenshot of Strava showing a squiggly line that shows about 8 laps back and forth across the deck of a presumably large, wide vessel with an open flat deck like an aircraft carrier.

@anon_opin
It's just about the money.

Digital books are cheaper, because no physical object changes hands.

Brick and mortar grocery shops are cheaper, because no delivery takes place.

Hi Fediverse!👋 We're Volt Europa, a pan-European political party building a federal, green, and progressive Europe. 🇪🇺

We believe in digital sovereignty, transparency, and putting people before platforms. Sound familiar? That's precisely why we're here.

We're not just looking for another channel to broadcast on. We chose this space because it reflects what we stand for: open, decentralised, and community-driven. We want to be part of this, not just present on it.

A yellow Mastodon mascot plushie, known as "Voltodon," sits centered against a vibrant purple Volt Europa flag. The plushie is round and soft, with small black vertical oval eyes, white tusks, and a short trunk. It wears a black baseball cap featuring the Volt logo: the word "Volt" in white text, surrounded by a circular crown of twelve stars in various colors (yellow, green, blue, and red).

The background is a deep purple fabric flag with the large, white, sans-serif letters "Volt" partially visible behind the plushie. The lighting is bright and even, highlighting the contrast between the sunny yellow of the Voltodon and the signature purple of the Volt brand. The overall vibe is friendly, cute, and politically engaged, symbolizing the intersection of the Volt Europa movement and the Fediverse community.

Enshittification doesn't work if there isn't a single party controlling (almost) everything. You try to provide a shit service, I will move to a different instance (or roll my own).

Somewhere, someone finally made this and I think it's beautiful: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4687836

@Foritus
We are the same height!

Interestingly, whenever I stand next to a person approximately my own height, I suddenly feel small.
@NanoRaptor

A meme titled "HDMI kids won't understand." It features portraits of Van Gogh, Beethoven, and Stevie Wonder paired with RCA cables. Van Gogh (missing an ear) is next to a yellow and red cable; Beethoven (deaf) is next to just a yellow cable; Stevie Wonder (blind) is next to red and white cables.

I have a framed print of https://xkcd.com/1133. In less than a month, it will probably start lying just below the title.

@NanoRaptor
Not quite at your level yet, but went pretty well I'd say.

It's unfortunate that what you say is true. It shouldn't be.

because ed(1) doesn't use arrow keys, it will never

give you UP
and will never let you DOWN

I think if a set of reasonably good open source models existed (*real* open source, not this 'osaid' crap that the OSI pulled) that anyone with a reasonably modern processor could run locally, that'd make such a difference...
