Btw, if anyone has recommendations regarding a KVM switch that supports 4k HDMI, I'd love to hear people's experiences.
@LinuxAndYarn I have a *breathes in* "CKLau 60 Hz 4:4:4 USB 3.0 4k x 2k 4 port kvm switch" *breathes out* which is a < 200 EUR-range thing that has been doing an adequate job for me for the last two and a half years (including switching between a Linux laptop with a USB-C DP Alt-mode - HDMI 4k60 dock, a Linux desktop, a Windows Desktop and a PS4). 4k @ 60 Hz with no noticeable issues.
I originally bought it from Amazon to be able to return it, but it seems that the listing has been repurposed for another device. Here's a link to the manufacturer direct:

Hijacking this, but any recommendations for a cheap KVM switch with four USB ports + one Ethernet one ?

@werdahias no idea!
@noodles @neil @LinuxAndYarn yeah, it does
@noodles @neil @olasd @LinuxAndYarn It's _sometimes_ possible to get HDMI 4k EDID emulators (ie tiny dongles with an HDMI plug at one end and an HDMI socket at the other, that always tell the laptop the monitor's connected, even when it isn't) for ~£10. (Last time I looked, a few days ago, they'd gone up closer to £20 which isn't such a bargain, but still not hideously expensive I suppose).
@noodles @neil @olasd @LinuxAndYarn Ah, that sounds like a massive pain! The ones I've had you have to program the EDID manually with I2C if you want something other than the default - which is a bit of a faff, but at least once it's in it stays there permanently...
