Portrait of a (unstaged except to remove prescription bottles, mail, and tabs related to my actual job)

My desk top and part of the adjoining bookshelf at right. From the top, a lithograph of a bluejay hangs on a yellow wall, partially blocked by a light clamped to the top of a 4k monitor; the lamps twin on the right is on. On the monitor, all the windows have been closed except a blanked shell and a Firefox browser with Mastodon open. To the left is a 1080p monitor turned sideways showing a DDG search and the rhythmbox music player.

Beneath the main monitor is a shelf with "Math for Security" and "Serious Python" print books, some loose rechargeable AA batteries, a webcam, and various tins.In front of them on the desktop are a ""self-rescuing princess" coffee mug, tablet and phone stands, a magic 8 ball, a multitool, and a bag of ginger chews in front of a SANS 504 challenge coin. Trays full of schmutz are on a pegboard behind the monitor of note are a poker chip from JawnCon, a frayed Purple Team badge ribbon, and a Philly LUG patch with Tux dressed like Ben Franklin. There are three pen cups: one is a Gino's Burgers & Chicken mug (from its brief return to life before the COVID pandemic).

At far right, an assortment of badges and lanyards hang from the top of a wooden bookshelf; one of the lanyards has a BBC micro:bit.

At the front of the desk, a fidget spinner, white-lit mechanical keyboard, wireless mouse and wrist rest sit on a "Nekomancer" desk mat. To their right, half of a blue/white/pink Phillies cap hangs above an old phone and power bank.

Btw, if anyone has recommendations regarding a KVM switch that supports 4k HDMI, I'd love to hear people's experiences.

@LinuxAndYarn I have a *breathes in* "CKLau 60 Hz 4:4:4 USB 3.0 4k x 2k 4 port kvm switch" *breathes out* which is a < 200 EUR-range thing that has been doing an adequate job for me for the last two and a half years (including switching between a Linux laptop with a USB-C DP Alt-mode - HDMI 4k60 dock, a Linux desktop, a Windows Desktop and a PS4). 4k @ 60 Hz with no noticeable issues.

I originally bought it from Amazon to be able to return it, but it seems that the listing has been repurposed for another device. Here's a link to the manufacturer direct:

Hijacking this, but any recommendations for a cheap KVM switch with four USB ports + one Ethernet one ?

@werdahias no idea!

@noodles @neil @olasd @LinuxAndYarn It's _sometimes_ possible to get HDMI 4k EDID emulators (ie tiny dongles with an HDMI plug at one end and an HDMI socket at the other, that always tell the laptop the monitor's connected, even when it isn't) for ~£10. (Last time I looked, a few days ago, they'd gone up closer to £20 which isn't such a bargain, but still not hideously expensive I suppose).

@noodles @neil @olasd @LinuxAndYarn Ah, that sounds like a massive pain! The ones I've had you have to program the EDID manually with I2C if you want something other than the default - which is a bit of a faff, but at least once it's in it stays there permanently...

@olasd OK, thanks
