people wouldn't drink and drive as much if instead of so much car-dependent infrastructure we had more robust public transit solutions that actually had decent hours and coverage but nobody wants to talk about that

not saying they're free from blame but like

you gotta look at the external influencing factors here too lol

it's not merely an individual failing

"uber"

uber expensive

and also if public transit wasn't stigmatized as a poor people thing

also

public transit should be free

@vantablack also also if public transit wasn't forced to be made "profitable" with fares.

if you're funding shit with tax money then access shouldn't be behind an additional paywall, no matter how small, *because the taxpayer has already funded it.*

@vantablack but how are the private companies running the public service going to make a profit vanta, can't you think of the poor shareholders

@vantablack my local council had a wonderful moment there recently; they're trying to push through a congestion charge so people have to pay money to be allowed to drive in the central parts of the city

and they went "but it's fine we'll also improve bus services to compensate honest"

and then a week later the private operator that runs all the bus services in the entire district went "actually we're closing a bunch of lines that aren't profitable enough lmao"

@vantablack (the main issue with congestion charges of course is that it'll disproportionately affect disabled people with mobility issues who can't walk between bus or train stops and home/their destination and who are already more likely to be lower income than abled folks, etc etc you know how this stuff all compounds every time)

@vantablack Meanwhile, Delhi Metro prohibits inebriated passengers.

@outie @vantablack Can people with disabilities not be exempted from the charges? πŸ€”

@contrapunctus @vantablack can and usually are but of course "with disabilities" there gets gatekept via other criteria (for example "gets government disability benefits") that are themselves gatekept or restricted to specific disabilities or conditions, etc

@outie @vantablack Ah, fair…

@contrapunctus why do you think that's wrong? @vantablack

@contrapunctus I see your point now; Delhi Metro should absolutely allow drunken people. I guess I confused your comment with the general issue of whether or not to ban alcohol in a state. (I support banning it actually.) @vantablack

@khubsuratinsaan @contrapunctus @vantablack As somone who is inebriated sometimes while on public transit, ive said this before and I will say this again, the actual rule of not being under the influence is not for High Caste or High Class people, I have dragged an obviously drunk friend who couldnt keep themselves up halfway across the city.

The rule is an excuse to refuse service to homeless people and people on the lower social strata

@disaster2life I am not sure if that was intended, but it is at least a symptom of making major decisions without giving adequate thought @vantablack @contrapunctus

@disaster2life It is probably more related to how much of a taboo public intoxication is in India. @vantablack @contrapunctus

@vantablack@cyberpunk.lol here in NL everyone drunk cycles instead which is definitely an improvement

Actual interaction I've had with a cop: "aren't you too drunk to cycle?" "yeah but it's to far to walk"

@khubsuratinsaan @vantablack @contrapunctus i'd say its rather intended, the Metro system is trying and designed for, one can say its unintended, but I don't buy it from how much the metro is always talked about as "the middle classes' transit". Drinking Alcohol is certainly a taboo, I grew up in that and have been deconstructing a lot of that, Every class group drinks, the stereotype of standing in line and drinking local booze is always just of the poor
