@jgys Oh yeah as I alluded to before, it works great for me and I know how to maintain services, but I'm not pushing it or recommending it to anyone for exactly the reasons you mention.

The entire archive of all CDC datasets uploaded before January 28th, 2025 has been backed up on Internet Archive.

Incredible work everyone. Science will never be silenced!

@valhalla @jgys @LALegault Well yeah I'm a technical person so that's solved for me, but the problem is with that last part in that it's really not yet a solution for everybody. And if 95%+ people are mass surveilled, then effectively everyone is.

@jgys You're not alone, phone's are a privacy nightmare. I use a de-googlified Android phone (and sync to my own server using Nextcloud). For technical/convenience reasons, obviously not a good solution for everyone. But that doesn't change the fact that Apple is about the worst of the worst when it comes to abusing copyright/IP, collecting data on their users, using data against their users, etc.

@LALegault Apple is an *extremely* toxic company that abuses their users in many different ways, and in these times it's just going to get a lot worse.

@LALegault If you're using an iPhone, you already have much larger problems.

@ubuntourist He should've called Hilary, she ran her own e-mail server and never had (technical) problems

re: covid, fosdem
I doubt a mask would help much in such a small enclosed space, unless the wearer actually has a cough or sneezes?

@tofticles Nice, I'll start writing little sex novellas everyone in my code then!

This year I miss being at FOSDEM. There's so many discussions that I'd like to have with like minded people that are just so much easier in person. I hope everyone who made it out there has a great weekend!

In case you missed it, acting ICE head Tom Homan was up yesterday complaining that ICE is having a hard time meeting the quotas they're setting because of campaigns telling people their rights and how to resist raids.

In case you're wondering if the little things you do could possibly make a difference, know that they already are.

@jasonkoebler thank goodness for data archivists and data hoarders

@bagder Well written and you get the point across very concisely! I despise those scanners too, since they end up not being very useful. On Debian, those tools don't understand that fixes get backported to stable versions and show big scary warnings where there are no problems at all.

@bagder But I would still read it, is it out yet?

The Debian Publicity Team will no longer post on X/Twitter. X evolved into a place where people we care about don't feel safe. In light of US tech oligarchy setting its sights on Wikimedia Foundation, a historical detail I did not know before: became the non-profit it is today partly as the result of a labour strike of Spanish Wikipedia editors who disagreed with the proposed inclusion of advertisements. Initially, it was not clear what revenue model Wikipedia would get, and Wales moved towards a for-profit model already a year after launch. However, rather than working for free, so Jimmy Wales could profit from their labour via advertising, Spanish contributors forked Spanish Wikipedia as the Encyclopedia Libre Universal. Under the threat of losing the editorial community of such a large language, Wales conceded and set up the non-profit.

That is to say, however imperfect they are, all the digital commons we have are the result of ongoing struggle and hard work to keep them as commons.

@debacle No love for rc-buggy?

@dansup @flancian Just a protip, if you're not transphobic, then one of the last things you should say is "I'm not transphobic I have trans friends". Especially since it's possible to say something transphobic even if you didn't mean it, or even not having had a clue that something might have come across as transphobic to someone else, which is why it's usually a good idea to hear people out and find out what might have caused some hurt.

@bagder Honestly? Not really.

In case you missed it, trixie freeze dates have been announced!
